Life is not easy or long on air and love alone or even on art - and not always good either. Because there is not enough money to heat the house in winter, the poet Rodolfo burns his draft play before it is time for the furniture. His artist and student friends are no better off. But where the hoped-for earnings go up in smoke and heat, another flame burns: that of love. The seamstress Mimi enters Rodolfo's life and makes it worth living again. But their happiness is short-lived, because Mimi is ill.
"La Bohème" is Giaocomo Puccini's fourth opera and, alongside his "Tosca", the most successful to date. Even if the world premiere did not foreshadow this global success, Puccini found his truly unique and unmistakable musical language for the first time here, combined with his unerring flair for the operatic stage. With "La Bohème", he unfolds a pictorial arc of the student artistic milieu in Paris, in which happiness and suffering are frighteningly close to one another.
