Orlando experiences the changing world over four centuries. But it's not just the world that changes. The story of the young nobleman begins in the 16th century: Elizabeth I chooses the handsome and intelligent lord as her lover. He is sent to Constantinople as a diplomat, where he gets caught up in social unrest and political upheaval. A fanfare changes everything: Orlandoo awakens as a woman.

From then on, she lives as Lady Orlando - returns to England, becomes a poet, lover, artist and single mother. Spared the signs of old age, her existence continues into the 20th century. Time and again, she has to face new challenges for women.

Virginia Woolf dedicates this masterpiece of literary modernism to her lover, the glamorous writer Vita Sackville-West. Based on historical changes, the author poetically and humorously dismantles the seemingly unambiguous. She questions the binary order of the sexes, social conventions and the permanence of power and status.
