"The beautiful days of Aranjuez are now at an end..."
"Fortunately not for us!" is how one would like to counter the famous opening lines from Schiller's "Don Karlos". Because not only does the traveling continue; we finally encounter the often kitschy but brilliantly composed "Concierto de Aranjuez" by Joaquín Rodrigo (1901-1990). One-hit wonder? Not at all! Because the Spanish composer left behind a large and attractive body of work. The short "Sones en la Giralda", inspired by the sounds of the former minaret and current bell tower of Seville Cathedral, show surprisingly different sides to Joaquín Rodrigo.

The fascinating soundscapes that Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) creates in his symphonies are still relatively unknown in this country or are overshadowed by 'wolf melodies' or musical love dramas. The 5th Symphony by the Russian composer, who broke with the ideological upheavals of his home country at an early age, is characterized by moving melodies whose serious tone cannot conceal the fact that the work was written in 1944, the year of the war, but which are as stirring as they are moving.

A true classic of program music can be heard at the beginning of the concert: In the short symphonic poem "A Steppe Sketch from Central Asia", Alexander Borodin (1833-1887) paints a fine miniature picture of sandy steppes and swaying camel backs.

In this season's Philharmonic Concerts, we would like to invite you to join us on a musical journey.

Fortunately, after traveling to other countries and cultures, we can all return to a warm, dry and safe home. However, many people do not have this opportunity. We would therefore like to accompany our concerts with a charity campaign to support those who have no home and are forced to live on the streets.

The donations collected will be donated to the Ulm district association of the German Red Cross, which provides various local support services for homeless people, such as the overnight shelter, the Ulm food bank, the reception center for women and the cold bus.
