At the beginning of his work on the "Mastersingers of Nuremberg", Richard Wagner planned a light comedy, a kind of satyr play. Almost twenty years later, it became a large-scale opera for the Munich premiere, the score of which is one of the composer's most colorful.

In 16th century Nuremberg, the goldsmith Veit Pogner offers his daughter in marriage to whoever wins the traditional singing competition of the Masters' Guild on St. John's Day - provided Eva agrees. She already has her eye on the young Walther von Stolzing, who, according to tradition, does not seem to be an option as a stranger. While the disagreeable Sixtus Beckmesser uses every means at his disposal to fight Stolzing, the Meistersinger Hans Sachs is aware of his quiet love for Eva, her limitations and his age.

What Richard Wagner conjures up in the "Meistersinger von Nürnberg" is far removed from the heroic gestures of heroism, the Nordic myths and gods that he was otherwise so fond of bringing to the stage. The "Meistersinger" are deeply human, warm-hearted and poetic. And they breathe the spirit of William Shakespeare as a kind of 'Nuremberg Midsummer Night's Dream' under fragrant lilacs.
