World premiere at the Kunstverein Ulm: "I saw three suns"
On Friday, February 20, 2026, the play "Drei Sonnen sah ich" by Wolfgang Schukraft celebrates its world premiere at the Kunstverein Ulm. The new production by Schukrafts Wundertüte - Theater in Ulm combines biographical storytelling with contemporary political history and musical motifs from Franz Schubert's "Winterreise".
At the center is a man who travels to East Germany decades later in order to understand the history of his family. As a child, he fled to West Germany with his mother, while his father stayed behind in the GDR. The decades-long silence about this separation begins to crumble as the protagonist sets off in search of clues: How do you find words as an adult for what was never spoken as a child?
Passages from Schubert's "Winterreise" are embedded in the play and act as an emotional commentary. The songs reflect themes such as foreignness, inner coldness and the search for home - but also comfort.
The production is directed by Wolfgang Schukraft.
