The cliché of the heroic white cowboy still shapes our image of the "Wild West" to this day. In reality, a quarter of the cowboys were African-American. In recent years, a community of black cowboys has emerged in the USA who are now telling their own story.
In 2022 and 2023, Sabine Bungert and Stefan Dolfen traveled from Maryland to California, via Arizona, New Mexico to Texas, on to South and North Carolina and to Chicago. They met numerous Black cowboys and Black cowgirls as well as people interested in their culture. Sabine Bungert and Stefan Dolfen have been working together on long-term photographic projects for over 15 years.
