By arranging the “Jupiter Symphony” for string quintet, P. Lilienthal—a friend of Mozart’s son Karl—sought to make this music accessible to a wider audience. Schönberg, too, did not achieve this until later, following a scandal-ridden premiere—a fact that may also be attributed to the erotic poem on which the work is based. Brahms destroyed many of his early chamber music works, considering them half-baked. Thus, the G-major Sextet is an “early work” by the composer, who was already 32 years old at the time.
