It’s late summer and the grapes are ripening in the garden when Christina inherits her grandmother’s house: Anni, who fled Romania for Germany in the mid-1960s. As a packer at the mail-order company “Quelle,” she fought tenaciously against loneliness and the feeling of being an outsider. Was that the good life she had dreamed of?

Reluctantly, Christina says goodbye to Anni and her house. Gradually, she discovers what she truly owes her grandmother: the freedom to let go and find for herself the place where the good life truly belongs.

Nadine Schneider was born in Nuremberg in 1990 to Romanian-German parents. Her first novel, “Drei Kilometer,” received several awards.
